Start of Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy
The idea to start the men’s field hockey champions trophy was initiated by Pakistan Hockey Federation through its chairman Air Marshal Nur Khan in 1978. The International Hockey Federation has approved the tournament in 1978. It has been decided that the top-ranked teams of the world will take part in the tournament and it will be held after every two years. The second trophy was played after two years and after that, this tournament was held every year until 2012. The last three competitions were held after two years gap. The trophy was played in a round-robin format. The champions trophy was played up until 2018.
1978 Lahore – Pakistan

The 1st edition of the hockey champions trophy was hosted by Pakistan and five world’s top teams participated in the tournament. each team played with each team and at the top of the table will be the winner of the champions trophy.

1980 Karachi – Pakistan

The 2nd edition of the men’s field hockey champions trophy was again hosted by Pakistan and a total of seven teams participated in the tournament.

1981 Karachi – Pakistan

1988 Lahore – Pakistan

The 10th edition of the hockey champions trophy was played in Pakistan. The top six teams played in the event.

1989 Berlin – West Germany

This is the 11th edition of the champions trophy and hosted by West Germany. Six teams participated in the event.

1993 Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia

2011 Auckland – New Zealand

33rd edition of the champions trophy initially, New Dehli have to host the event but due to some problems in the Indian hockey federation, the International hockey federation FIH moved this event to New Zealand. Eight teams participated in the competition.

2012 Melbourne – Australia

After completion of the group stage, all the teams will play the quarter-final. The next champions trophy tournaments will be played after the gap of two years.

2018 Breda – Netherlands

The 37th edition of the champions trophy was hosted by the Netherlands and it was the last edition of the champions trophy in which six teams take part and the top two teams play the final.
